Trump's victory in 2016 seems to be more associated with the complete failure of the political system to present 2 competent candidates. Trump was the wild card. People were tired of politicians and voted for someone that was too dumb to be that clever.

Hilary's camp absolutely dropped the ball from campaigning to PR. It should have been a landslide democratic victory. Based on trump's complete ineptitude I don't think he expected to win either.
