Some of the founding fathers were less enlightened than others, but the U.S. constitution provided the foundation for the progress we have today.

Understanding things in a historical context is important because there are ideas that are worth examining that may have come from people in a less enlightened time. Unless the teacher is idolizing racist ideas or the material is just plain wrong in a scientific sense, we shouldn't purge every text.
